Fall Has Arrived + Spring 2010 CCA Work

As promised… almost 4 months ago, I am posting some work I completed last semester at CCA. I had a extremely busy summer break. I spent 3 months in Missouri helping my Mom at her new cafe she opened earlier this year. I thought I would have time to work on some unfinished projects and blog, but the cafe kept me much more busy than I expected. It was a lot of work, but I really enjoyed spending time with my Mom and I think it was beneficial to get my mind off of school and animation for a while. I had been going non-stop for over 3 years (including school and working at Double Helix). I had a lot of time to think about my goals, my progress up to this point in my life and and what I hope to achieve the rest of my time at CCA. My enthusiasm for school is just as strong as last semester and I am eager to start animating again.

So, without further ado, here is some work that I did for my Designing for Shots class last semester. The class was taught by Pixar Art Director, Anthony Cristov. The class work consisted of creating pre-production artwork, with a focus on designing “shots.” A shot, in terms of the class, is a storytelling idea composed for the camera. For the class, we were asked to choose a story, then design a series of shots. After shots, we then moved on to environments and characters. During the course of the class, I did three stories: Treasure Island, Murders at the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allen Poe as well as a personal story I am developing for my Senior Project film.

Those are all my favorite pieces from the class. Overall, it was a very challenging class for me. It definitely confirmed my choice to become a animator and not a visual development artist. Even after all these years in art school, I still suck at perspective and totally loathe it.
